"Io ricostruisco la figura dell'uomo d'arme tirolese Gaudenz von Matsch (c. 1436-1504), Sigonre di Churburg (Castel Coira) . La sua esatta data di nascita è sconosciuta, ma i suoi genitori si sposarono nel 1435 e Gaudenz nel 1454 stava già combattendo nei tornei, quindi il 1436 è l'anno più probabile della sua nascita. Fu descritto come un signore affascinante, cavalleresco e coraggioso. Fu allevato alla corte dell'arciduca Sigismondo d'Austria, che servì poi come comandante militare. Fu anche ambasciatore di Sigismondo, prima di entrare al servizio del duca di Milano all'inizio degli anni ottanta del Quattrocento. L'armatura che userò al TORNEOINARMATURA si basa su quella di Gaudenz, probabilmente realizzata per la campagna del 1487 e conservata oggi al castello di Coira.
La mia delegazione è in realtà quella del decenne Filippo "il Bello", duca di Borgogna e figlio dell'imperatore Massimiliano. Il principe Filippo è in viaggio verso Roma per un'udienza con il papa, ha viaggiato attraverso la Borgogna, la Baviera e l'Austria in compagnia del suo tutore, il grande cavaliere Olivier de la Marche assistito dalla moglie Isabeau Machefoing e dal suo cameriere personale, Charles de Lalaing.
Ad Innsbruck si sono uniti a loro il rappresentante dell'arciduca Sigismondo, Gaudenz von Matsch, che combatterà per conto del principe nel torneo, e l'armaiolo di Gaudenz, Hans Prunner. "
Hi Tobias what can you tell us about your man-at-arms and your delegation?
"I represent the Tyrolean knight Gaudenz von Matsch (c. 1436-1504), Lord of Churburg Castle (Castel Coira) . His exact birthdate is unknown, but his parents married in 1435, and Gaudenz was already fighting in tournaments by 1454, so 1436 is the most likely year of his birth. He was described as a charming, chivalrous and brave lord, not some aloof and effete courtier.’ He was brought up at the court of Archduke Sigismund of Austria, whom he then served as a military commander. He also acted as Sigismund’s ambassador, before entering the service of the Duke of Milan in the early 1480s. He returned to Austria when he was appointed Chief Steward to the Archduke, commanding the Imperial army in the campaign against Venice in 1487, when he took the fortress of Reverto and destroyed the Venetian army at the Battle of Calliano.
My armour is based on Gaudenz’s own armour, probably made for the 1487 campaign, and preserved today at Churburg Castle.
My delegation is actually that of the 10-year old Philip ‘the Handsome’, Duke of Burgundy and son of the Emperor Maximilian. Prince Philip is journeying to Rome for an audience with the Pope, and has travelled down through Burgundy, Bavaria and into Austria in the company of his tutor, the great knight Olivier de la Marche, and attended also by Olivier’s wife Isabeau Machefoing and his esquire of the body, Charles de Lalaing. At Innsbruck their company has been joined by Archduke Sigismund’s representative, Gaudenz von Matsch, who will fight on the Prince’s behalf in the tournament, and Gaudenz’s armourer, Hans Prunner. "
Sei alla tua seconda partecipazione al TORNEOINARMATURA, cosa ti ha spinto a partecipare la prima volta e cosa ti ha spinto a partecipare a questa nuova edizione?
"Ho partecipato la prima volta dopo essere stato stato gentilmente invitato. Sono sempre stato molto colpito e ispirato da Famaleonis e dal loro lavoro. La prima volta ho partecipato solo come uomo d'arme, combattendo per conto del duca di Milano (Gaudenz von Matsch era al servizio di Francesco Sforza all'inizio degli anni '80 del Quattrocento e sposò una nobildonna milanese). Questa volta per me era importante partecipare con la mia delegazione: una sfida molto eccitante!"
This is your second time participating in the TORNEOINARMATURA, why did you decide to participate the first time and what encouraged you to participate in this new edition?
"I participated the first time because I was graciously invited, and I have always been very impressed and inspired by Famaleonis and their work. The first time I appeared only as a guest, fighting on behalf of the Duke of Milan (Gaudenz von Matsch was in the service of Francesco Sforza in the early 1480s, and married a Milanese noblewoman). In returning however, it was important to me to contribute my own delegation - a very exciting challenge!"
Cosa ne pensi della formula dell'evento senza pubblico dedicato solo ai reenactor?
"È incredibile, non c'è davvero nient'altro di simile - di certo non ho mai fatto niente di simile in oltre 30 anni di eventi a medievali. Mi piace fare eventi per il pubblico, ma quelli non possono mai essere altro che una performance ... uno spettacolo. Senza il pubblico, l'evento diventa molto più coinvolgente e magico, molto più autentico, almeno per quella che è stata la mia esperienza personale."
What do you think of the event’s formula dedicated solely to re-enactors without an audience?
"It’s amazing, there is really nothing else like it - I have certainly never done anything like it in 30+ years of chivalric adventures. I enjoy doing events for the public, but those can never be anything other than a kind of staged performance... a show. Without the audience, the event becomes so much more immersive and magical, so much more authentic, somehow, at least as personal experience."

Nell'ambiente c'è molto interesse e grande rispetto per il livello qualitativo di questo evento. Spesso mi hanno chiesto informazioni sul regolamento dei combattimenti e altri aspetti dell'evento.
Considering you’ve participated in several events around Europe, have you ever had the chance to discuss TORNEOINARMATURA with fellow participants? What are some of the most common questions?
"Yes, amongst armoured martial artists, there is a lot of interest, and huge respect for the high level of quality and authenticity. I have also been asked about the rules of the combat, how it works, etc."
Conosci già alcuni degli altri uomini d'arme? chi temi di più? vuoi fare un pronostico sul vincitore?
"Sì, l'ultima volta ho avuto il piacere di incontrare diversi uomini d'arme, anche se non sono riuscito a confrontarmi con tutti. Non temo nessuno di loro, anche se sono ben consapevole che sono tutti perfettamente in grado di battermi. Ma so che posso batterli anche io! Non faccio previsioni sul vincitore: non spetta a me fare certe previsioni."
Do you already know some of the other men-at-arms? Who do you fear most? Would you like to make any predictions about a winner?
"Yes, I had the pleasure of meeting a number of them last time, although I didn’t get to fight them all. I do not fear any of them, although I am well aware that they are all perfectly capable of beating me. But I know I can beat them too! I will not predict a winner – it is not my place to contemplate such things."
