Ciao Filippo ci racconti qualcosa del tuo uomo d'arme e della tua delegazione?

"L’uomo d’arme e questa delegazione sono nati nel 2014 per la prima edizione di Torneo in armatura, il mio “personaggio” è il figlio di un giurista e nipote di uno dei mercanti più ricchi della Rimini Malatestiana, quest’ultimo è un personaggio realmente esistito di nome Ludovico Mengozzi, avo della mia nonna materna.

La storia dietro il personaggio è semplice, appassionato di letteratura e storia, mandato come messo presso la corte vescovile tridentina conosce la sua futura moglie, la nobile Pentesilea, nipote del Vescovo Conte di Trento; abbandonata la breve carriera militare si dedica agli studi e al collezionismo di antichità. Pentesilea viene dalle strette e boscose valli che dal Tonale scendono sino a Mezzo-Corona, figlia del fratello minore del Vescovo Conte di Trento incarna perfettamente lo spirito del nome che le è stato dato: come la regina delle amazzoni arde di passione guerresca e si diletta nella caccia ma sotto la sua apparenza possiede un animo gentile e delicato, incline alle arti liberali e al garbo della vita cortese.

Ad accompagnarci c’è il fidato araldo Orso da Rimino, terrore di molti castellani e nobili: la sua parlantina e il suo animo hanno piegato con rime e carmi molti spiriti poco avvezzi alle mollezze del bel vivere di corte.

Poi abbiamo delle new entry, negli anni abbiamo avuto tante persone che ci hanno accompagnato; il primo dei nuovi membri è Marco detto “Brandimazza”, quasi due metri di famiglio proveniente dalla Verona del letterato Guarino. Il gigante gentile è la scorta armata di questa compagnia, ma teme di fare troppo male con le sue doti guerresche e ha chiesto di evitare il torneo dei famigli per non avere giovani anime sulla coscienza. Last but not least una coppia storica della rievocazione, Andrea e Silvia, che ci accompagneranno come parte della piccola cerchia di fini umanisti nata intorno al personaggio del mio uomo d’arme, portando consiglio e moderazione ai più scalmanati giovani."

Hi Filippo, what can you tell us about your man-at-arms and your delegation?

"My man-at-arms and this delegation date back to 2014 for the very first edition of TORNEOINARMATURA. My “character” is the son of a jurist and nephew of one of the richest merchants of the Malatesta Rimini who really existed and was named Ludovico Mengozzi, ancestor of my maternal grandmother.

The story behind my character is simple. A literature and history enthusiast sent as a messenger to the Tridentine bishop’s court where he meets his future wife, the nobel Pentesilea, niece of the Bishop Count of Trent; after abandoning a brief military career, he dedicates his life to studying and collecting antiques. Pentesilea is from the narrow and wooded valleys that descend from Tonale to Mezzo-Corona, daughter of the youngest brother of the Bishop Count of Trent, who perfectly embodies the spirit of the name she has been given: like the queen of the Amazons, she burns with war-like passion and loves hunting, but beneath her appearances she has a gentle and delicate soul inclined to liberal arts and the polite manners of courtly life.

Accompanying us will be our trusted herald Orso of Rimino, the terror of many castles and noblemen: his gift of the gab and soul have outdone many spirits not accustomed to the lap of luxury of courtly life with rhymes and songs.

Then we have our new entry. Over the years we’ve had many people accompany us. The first of our new members is Marco, known as “Brandimazza”, standing at nearly 2 meters tall from the Verona of the writer Guarino. The gentle giant is the armed escort of the company, but is afraid to cause too much harm with his warlike skills and has asked to avoid the Torneo dei Famigli so as not to have the young lives on his conscience. Last but not least, we have our historical couple of the re-enactment, Andrea and Silvia, who will accompany us as part of the small circle for humanist purposes created around the character of my man-at-arms, providing advice and moderation to the more rowdy youngsters."

In passato hai già partecipato al TORNEOINARMATURA, cosa ti spinge a partecipare di nuovo a questo evento?

"Questo sarà il quarto torneo in cui scenderò in lizza e il quinto a cui partecipo. Mentre nelle precedenti edizioni ho voluto avere un animo competitivo quest’anno parteciperò per divertirmi il più possibile, soprattutto in virtù del fatto che gli ultimi due anni sono stati molto duri per tanti versi e che sarà un modo per esorcizzare e mitigare un po’ la durezza dell’ultimo periodo. Ammetto che non ho più fatto ricostruzione storica del XV secolo da 2018 e questo sarà un ottimo modo per ripartire, con alle spalle anche un po’ di esperienza in più (in fondo il mio lavoro in qualche modo ha a che fare con questa passione)."

You’ve participated in TORNEOINARMATURA before, what encouraged you to participate in this event again?

"This will be my fourth tournament to compete in, and the fifth to participate in. While in previous editions I cared about competing, this time I’m participating to just have as much fun as possible, especially since the last two years have been very difficult in many regards, so this will be a way to eliminate and alleviate the difficulty of this latest period of time. I’ll admit that I haven’t done any 15th century historical reconstructions since 2018, so this is a great way to get started again, especially with a bit more experience behind me (in some ways, my job has something to do with this passion). "

Cosa ne pensi della formula dell'evento senza pubblico dedicato solo ai reenactor?

"Penso che, purtroppo o per fortuna, questo sarà il futuro del re-enacment. Il pubblico richiede molte attenzioni, scalette serrate che non permettono di tirare fiato dopo gli scontri e godersi l’evento, spesso sottoponendo chi è li per passione a stare inutilmente al caldo o al servizio di guide e turisti; per quello esistono le giornate con guide didattiche."

What do you think of the event’s formula dedicated solely to re-enactors without an audience?

"I think, fortunately or unfortunately, this is the future of re-enactments. An audience requires a lot of attention and tight schedules that don’t give us time to breath between clashes and just enjoy the event, often subjecting those who are there for passion to spend useless time in the heat or at the service of guides and tourists. For that, there are days with educational guides."

Conosci già alcuni degli altri uomini d'arme? chi temi di più? vuoi fare un pronostico sul vincitore?

"Bene o male ho conosciuto tutti i partecipanti di persona, non ho ancora avuto il piacere di incrociare le spade con il conte Von Matsch e con con Giovanni di Cabrera; sicuramente per me saranno tutti avversari ostici visti i problemi di salute che ho avuto quest’anno ma tra tutti chi mi ispira più rispetto sono l’uomo d’arme Renzo e Gaudenzio, Orso ha riportato a parole le loro mirabolanti abilità in lizza.
Se dovessi puntare una liretta la metterei sull’uomo d’arme fiorentino, che in fondo è romagnolo, e si sa, buon sangue non mente."

Do you already know some of the other men-at-arms? Who do you fear most? Would you like to make any predictions about a winner?

"I’ve met more or less all of the participants. I haven’t had the pleasure of crossing swords with the count Von Matsch or with Giovanni of Cabrera. To be sure, they’ll all be tough opponents for me given the health problems I’ve had this year, but out of all of them, the ones who seem to be the most worthy of my respect are the men-at-arms Renzo and Gaudenzio. Orso has reported their admirable skills in competition. As for who will win, I couldn’t say, but if I had to bet, I’d put my money on the Florentine man-at-arms, who deep down is Romagnolo, and, you know, good blood never lies."
